Teachers Union update

Kia ora whānau,
You may be aware that NZEI Te Riu Roa (the teachers’ union) is currently bargaining with the Government for a renewed Collective Agreement. This process sets the pay and conditions for teachers, principals, and other school staff across Aotearoa.
What are educators asking for?
Teachers and support staff are seeking changes to ensure that education is well resourced and sustainable for the future. The key claims include:
- A teacher aide in every classroom – to provide direct support for learners and teachers, ensuring tamariki have the help they need to thrive.
- Fair pay and secure work – so that teachers, teacher aides, and other staff are recognised for their skills and can stay in the profession.
- Improved support for te reo Māori and Te Tiriti commitments – through dedicated funding and resources.
- Better access to early childhood education – affordable, high-quality options available for all tamariki.
- Addressing workload pressures – giving teachers more time to focus on planning, assessment, and supporting individual learning.
Why does this matter?
The overall aim of these claims is to attract and keep great educators in schools, reduce workload pressures, and make sure every child has access to the learning support they need.
We will continue to keep you informed as bargaining continues. Thank you for your ongoing support of our teachers, support staff, and tamariki.
Ngā mihi,
Bonnie Mills
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

Kia takatū i te wiki o te reo Māori! Get ready for Māori language week! Next week our tamariki will be celebrating Te Wiki of Te Reo Māori by doing rotations of cultural and language activities in their teams. Please ask them about what they have experienced.
'Ko ngā pae tawhiti whāia kia tata, ko ngā pae tata, whakamaua kia tina' The potential for tomorrow depends on what we do today.
Cross Country
Cross Country We want to extend a huge THANKS to all the parents and caregivers who came out to support our cross country at school in week 6. It makes a difference for the runners to hear your cheers. A special mention goes out to Michael Shearer and Sophia Malu for their organisation of this event. We were also very pleased that the sun decided to make an appearance. As always the determination and effort of all our tamariki was outstanding. They should be very proud of themselves.

Environmental updates
Now the frosts are hopefully done Room 8 planted the seed potatoes and look forward to harvesting them later in the year. A big thank you to Mr Conley for helping us plant them correctly so they grow well.
We have also had some room 13 students, Reeve, Kiwa, Ben and Nixon, renovate our swap station, where we can share vegetables and fruits - taking what you need and leaving what you can share in a bid to reduce waste as we work together to make our community stronger.
We are also asking for milk bottle lids to be brought to school. They can be given to class teachers and are for an upcoming project.

Parking Reminders
A friendly reminder about traffic safety around our kura. The safety of all our tamariki is our top priority, and we ask for everyone’s patience and cooperation during busy pick-up and drop-off times.
Please remember:
- Do not park in accessible car parks unless you are entitled to use them.
- Avoid stopping or parking in the bus stop area.
- Do not park or stop on the yellow lines outside our school.
These road rules are in place to keep visibility clear, protect our pedestrians, and ensure safe access for all.
The New Plymouth District Council is currently monitoring motorist behaviour around schools, so we appreciate your support in following these guidelines and modelling safe behaviour for our tamariki.
During the upcoming holidays NPDC will be installing bollards on the grassed area across the road from our kura. The orange spots indicates where these bollards will be place. These bollards are similar to the ones installed at East End Cafe.
Ngā mihi nui for helping us make our school environment safe for everyone.
