Learning at Welbourn
The New Zealand curriculum is well underway at Welbourn.
Structured Literacy and Mathematics are our main areas of focus for 2025.
As educators, we understand that sitting alongside the academic learning in Mathematics and English, is the importance of continually affirming and developing the mana of our tamariki (children). Our Mana Model talks about Mana Motuhake - where children believe they can be successful and that they can achieve at school through being persistent and taking responsibility.
This comes through clearly in the curriculum refresh and is evident in the teaching and learning happening in our classrooms each day.

Garden To Table
About ten days ago, Room 1 got busy planting seedlings for our school garden. The containers our tamariki put the seeds in were kindly made by Room 6. A great team effort. We all belong to this wonderful kura. We are aware of the importance of feeling connected to others and our environment. Mana ūkaipō. We all belong here and share the responsibility for our environment. Ka mau te wehi!

The Boy Who Cried Wolf

Yesterday, New Zealand Playhouse came to school to present the show ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf’. There was a boy (Danny Boy) who was the biggest prankster in the world. He was sentenced to 2025 hours looking after sheep. Bo Peep was a news reporter, and Mary was the one who usually looked after the sheep, and they followed her everywhere. She absolutely hated it! Bo Peep told Danny to cry wolf if he saw one. However, he had the idea to cry wolf to get out of the job, but when he did, the firefighters (Jack and Jill) came with a bucket of wolf water. They were searching through the Welbourn students for the wolf. First, they thought Luca was a wolf, then, when Jack was about to throw the water, Jill shouted, “Stop!” Next, Jack thought Mrs Sargent was the wolf, but Jill shouted, “Stop!” A montage followed with the signs and shouting. Jack and Jill left, saying they wouldn’t come again (they were very sad). Suddenly, all the sheep started disappearing. Whenever Danny shouted wolf, one more would disappear. At the end, they discovered the sheep stealer was Little Bo Peep because she wanted the sheep. They received a postcard from Mary saying she wasn’t coming back and she didn’t want the sheep. She was going to be a goat herder. Little Bo Peep took over looking after the sheep and Danny Boy became the new news reporter. It was the best show! Also, a funny part was whenever they said the word “news”, a guy in a green suit came out and sang… “ News, news, news, news, everybody loves news…” Ask your child to sing it for you!
