Education Review Office (ERO)
We would like to share that the Education Review Office (ERO) will be visiting our school from 20-23 May as part of its regular review process. This visit is an opportunity for us to showcase the high-quality teaching and learning that happens every day at Welbourn School, as well as the strong, positive culture that makes our school such a special place.
At Welbourn, we take great pride in our engaged learners, dedicated staff and supportive whānau. Our commitment to student success—both academically and holistically—continues to drive us forward. This review will allow us to reflect on our strengths and achievements while also gaining valuable insights to help us improve and grow for the future.
What does this visit mean for our school community?
- ERO will spend time in classrooms, talking with teachers and students, and reviewing how we support learning and well-being.
- They may also speak with parents, caregivers, and Board members to gain a broad perspective on our school’s environment and progress.
- The review is a collaborative process, and we welcome the opportunity to share our journey while gaining constructive feedback to help shape our next steps.
We look forward to working alongside ERO during their visit, sharing the results of the review and working to continue to grow Welbourn’s future improvements. Thank you for your ongoing support in making Welbourn School a fantastic place for our tamariki to learn and thrive. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me principal@welbourn.school.nz

Poutamariki Weaving Workshop
On Thursday we were lucky enough to have the opportunity for 7 of our ākonga to join artists Maureen Lander and Karen Clark to participate in a weaving workshop. The project explores the strength found through whanaungatanga and the connections between whakapapa and raranga (weaving) . The participants learned three types of raranga, whiri and whatu to make their own kits sets which will link to other kit sets from other schools to form several pou as part of a larger installation to be exhibited at the Govett Brewster Art Gallery from 14 June-12 October 2025. This project offered a fun and meaningful opportunity for tamariki to create, learn and connect. We cannot wait to see this exhibition when it opens in June. Mahi tika ana! Great work!

Social and Emotional Coaching Corner
Caught Being Good. At Welbourn we use a system of catching students being good. The image below shows the physical item the children post in a box ( with the chance of being drawn out at assembly for a small prize). This is around their attitude and the values they show each day. Research tells us that SELF ESTEEM is built through growing competency in our tamariki. We endeavour to develop each child`s self esteem. At home, doing chores is part of building this. Perhaps you can plan for this during the upcoming school holidays. It allows them to see themselves as valuable and capable. Your system can have the same principal but using something which is readily available in you home.
We will continue to share some of our practices with you so that you have an understanding of what we do here at Welbourn to support our learners as they develop both socially and emotionally. You may wish to use some of these ideas or discuss them further. Our door is always open for any discussions or support which may be needed.
