Fonterra Milk in Schools

Room 5 were having a tough time getting their milk cartons folded properly so our two classes met together to do some problem solving. We watched a video to learn about the Fonterra Milk in Schools programme, we found partners to work with and then the children from Room 11 explained each step of the folding process to their buddy. Room 5 children had to listen carefully to follow each step. What a success! All the cartons were folded beautifully in under a minute!!! Great teamwork everyone, brilliant instructing Room 11 and wonderful listening Room 5, tino pai!

Class Treaty

We began learning about The Treaty of Waitangi by reading 'The Tree Hut Treaty' and discussed the ideas we would like to have included in our class treaty. Once our treaty was made we all agreed to sign it. To make our treaty look as old as the Treaty of Waitangi we did some controlled tearing and crumpling before painting it with dye! After that we had a wonderful morning working together to make our own tree and tree hut, putting all the words we had discussed for our treaty on the special step ladder. Finally we did a team quiz to see how much we had remembered-pretty impressive Ruma Rima!

The Year of Rooster

Room 5 had a great day learning a bit about Chinese New Year and important characteristics of The Rooster. We had some experts in class helping us with pronouncing Happy New Year in Cantonese and Mandarin. We also learnt some cool folding and cutting techniques as we made our Roosters.

Magic Magnetic Olympic Race Tracks

We've had a bit of fun creating different Olympic race tracks in Room 5. We decided we needed to have a clear track, an athlete, spectators, a podium and the olympic rings. We secretly raced our olympians (which were on a paper clip) with a magnet hidden underneath the track. We then wrote instructions for how to make your own game and had great fun competing to get on the podium. This also inspired us to write some pretty amazing stories about the day we won a gold medal in Rio, We were pretty proud of our work so we shared our games and writing at the Pukeko team assembl

Sent with love and a hug!

Room 5 recently wrote a special thank you letter to someone who did something nice with them in the holidays.  The children published their letters and learnt how to write their address. We kept this a secret from our families and after making sure we had the correct postage, they were posted last week. We then waited patiently to see when they would arrive! We hope you love our letters as much as we loved sending them, thank you for all you do for us, love Room 5! x

Marvellous Maths Week

Once again the Pukeko team would like to thank our wonderful whanau for their tremendous support. What a great morning and turnout to end a brilliant Maths Week. All week long the tamariki have been busy solving clues to find some special treasure and earn 'maths stars'. Today there was a great atmosphere as our families joined in the fun playing some of the many games we use to help us secure our knowledge and develop our strategies.

"What's your favourite thing about your school?"

Sarah wrote a great letter to Sticky TV which won the competition! The whole class won a colouring book and a BananaGrams game! Awesome! Sarah wrote;

I go to Welbourn School in New Plymouth. Our class (Room 5) does really cool activities. Tomorrow we are having a kite flying day and a shared picnic lunch with all our whanau. We made the kites with our whanau to celebrate Matariki. Tomorrow we are telling them the story of the little blue duck (whio). This is a photo of my kite.

Room 5 have now written letters back to Sarah and Sticky TV to say thanks as we are pretty impressed that Sarah's letter was the winner for the whole of New Zealand!! Watch out for other letters that may come to a letterbox near you soon...

I wonder....What is your favourite thing about school?
